Flower Therapy - Healing Naturally

Flower therapy is the act of healing with flowers. It is believed that though flower energies are subtle, over time their effects can be profound. Flower essences are the blossoms of plants prepared from a sun infusion in a bowl of water. The flowers are exposed to noon sunlight for about three hours. The essence is then mixed with alcohol, which acts as a preservative, and dispensed in liquid or pill form.

"The main reason for the failure of the modern medical science is that it is dealing with results and not causes. Nothing more than the patching up of those attacked and the burying of those who are slain, without a thought being given to the real strong hold."

Flower essence, dispensed this way, is believed to have a calming effect, taking away negative feelings such as anger, fear, lack of confidence, guilt, and so on. Hence, the term flower essence therapy.

In flower therapy, the selection of medicine is based on the attitude or negative feeling. Therapists state that even the act of selecting the flowers is a tremendously relaxing and calming experience. Through quiet meditation, reflection, self observation, and consultation with others, it is possible to become aware of oneself and of issues that require one’s attention.

Two types of flower therapy are prevalent today: Bach flower therapy and the Eiseman flower therapy. Dr. Edward Bach was a pioneer in understanding the connection between the emotional self and physical health, and is considered to be the founder of flower essence therapy. He believed in healing certain physical and mental ailments through oils extracted from flowers, and theorized that ill health (physical imbalance & disease) results when we are in imbalance, disassociated from others, or disconnected from our life purpose.

Eiseman flower therapy, on the other hand, believes in enhancing moods through colors and patterns of flower arrangements. Color helps us find balance and flowers are an ideal way to harness the power of color to enrich our lives. Certain color combinations, expressed in floral arrangements, can relax the senses, and stimulate positive feelings.

Read More: Flower Therapy Healing Natuarally Using Bach Flower Therapy

(1886 - 1936)

Flower essence therapy is the art of healing with flowers, and Dr. Edward Bach is considered to be the father of this practice. He was a pioneer in understanding the connection between the emotional self and physical health, and believed in healing physical and mental ailments through oils extracted from flowers.

The diseased more valuable than the disease:

Dr. Bach (1886–1936) was a British bacteriologist and pathologist, working on vaccines and homeopathic remedies. He operated a successful practice, but was increasingly dissatisfied with orthodox medicine—more so because of its concentration on the disease rather than on the person suffering the disease. He observed the close connection between a person’s disease and some form of stress or trauma in the person’s life. A woman suffering from acute asthma, for instance, was extremely concerned about her son who had moved away from her and lost touch. However, when he reappeared in her life, she recovered almost instantly.

Emotional Healing:

One fine day, Edward Bach quit his practice and decided to devote his studies to a system of curing that was more nature based and less science based. He wandered the countryside, tasting dewdrops on the petals of wildflowers, and found that he experienced great emotional healing this way.

With dedicated, patient, and systematic practice, he studied different species of flowers and found 38 species with unique curative powers. He developed new and innovative methods to produce large amounts of extract for his patients.

He would spend spring and summer looking for and preparing remedies, he would spend winter helping and advising all who came looking for hem. He would actually put himself through the emotional state that he needed to cure, study various flowers, and then come up with a remedy to cure that emotional state. Needless to say, the process was extremely painful and took a lot of energy and sacrifice on his part.

Read More: Dr Edward Bach, Bach Flower Therapy

Bach Flower Therapy

Bach Flower Therapy is a form of energy-based medicine that treats stress, mood swings, emotional problems, fears, and anxieties, and is an alternative to psychotropic medicine. It treats with pure energy and attempts to generate changes in the energetic field of the patient. Psychotropic medication, on the other hand, uses narcotics, anti-depressants, and anti-psychotics to control pain, and neurological and psychiatric illnesses. Bach Flower Therapy could be considered to be an extension of herbal medicine, using natural ingredients to restore emotional imbalances.

Bach Flower Remedy

A Bach Flower remedy consists of water that has been patterned with the energetic vibrations of one of 38 different flowers. The flowers are steeped in water under sunlight for a period of time, or if no sunlight is available, the solution may be boiled. The remedy or “mother tincture” is then is added to a cup of water (or other beverage) four times a day. It is combined with alcohol, for preservative purposes, and dispensed as liquid or in the form of pills.

Bach Flower Therapy treats Shades of emotion

Bach Flower Therapy treats specific shades of emotion. Each emotional disturbance is treated with a particular flower essence remedy. For instance, Aspen is used to treat the fear of unknown things; Beech to treat intolerance; Cherry Plum to treat the fear of the mind giving way; Gorse to treat hopelessness and despair; Heather to treat self-centeredness and self-despair; Mustard to treat deep gloom for no reason; Pine to treat guilt; and so on. The most well know flower remedy is the Rescue Remedy combination, which contains an equal amount each of Rock Rose, Impatiens, Clematis, Star of Bethlehem, and Cherry Plum remedies. This combination is used to treat stress, anxiety, and panic attacks, especially in mergencies.
There is also Rescue Cream, which contains the same remedies with the addition of Crab Apple. It is prepared in paste form, to be applied externally to treat minor skin problems such as itches and burns.

After Edward Bach

After Edward Bach’s time, makers of flower remedies all over the world have created thousands of additional remedies based on Bach principles. Currently over 400 small to medium flower essence makers are active all over the world.

Read More: Bach Flower Therapy

Eiseman Flower Therapy

Leatrice Eiseman, international color expert and proponent of flower therapy, believes that humans respond emotionally to color and to unique combinations of flowers. Her brand of flower therapy proposes that flowers, with their designs and color schemes, invoke mood-enhancing feelings. This is different from Edward Bach’s theory of flower therapy that believes in enhancing moods through flower essences.

Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, believes that “color can help us find the balance we seek from our surroundings. And, flowers are an ideal way to harness the power of color to enrich our lives.” Certain color combinations, expressed in floral arrangements, can relax the senses, and stimulate positive feelings.

Eiseman is internationally recognized for her six books on color, including Colors for Your Every Mood and Color Answer Book. She has identified five emotional color palettes that are expressed through color combinations in floral arrangements. Each combination offers a unique form flower therapy.
